Discover how to easily pay for your Opodo trips in installments

The installment payment on an online travel site primarily depends on the mechanism offered at checkout. Opodo, one of the leading online travel agencies in Europe, no longer has an integrated installment module in its booking process. This does not mean that staggered payments are impossible, but the path to achieving this now involves external solutions, either banking or third-party.

Bank installment after purchase: the method that works on Opodo

Since Opodo does not display a 3x or 4x option at payment, the most straightforward solution is to use the installment feature offered by one’s own bank. Several French institutions allow transforming an already completed transaction into an installment payment, directly from the mobile app or online client area.

Specifically, once the Opodo reservation is paid in full by card, the account holder logs into their banking space and selects the relevant transaction. They then choose a payment schedule, typically in three or four monthly installments. The bank then applies installment fees, which vary depending on the institution and the amount.

A detailed guide explains how to pay in installments with Opodo through these various banking and alternative financing options.

Banks that commonly offer this service include BNP Paribas, Crédit Agricole, and Banque Populaire. On the side of online banks, Hello Bank! and Boursorama have expanded their installment offers since 2024, with packages sometimes focused on travel expenses.

Conditions to check before activating the installment

  • The minimum eligible transaction amount varies from bank to bank, often set at a few dozen euros for standard cards
  • The time frame to request the installment is limited: some banks require this to be done within days of the debit, not beyond
  • The associated fees (fixed commissions or interest rates) should be compared to the cost of a traditional travel loan to assess the relevance of the operation

Travel credit and BNPL: alternatives to bank installment for booking on Opodo

Bank installment is not the only option. Two other mechanisms allow spreading the cost of an Opodo reservation, each with its own constraints.

The first is the dedicated travel credit, offered by specialized players. Platforms like Monde du Voyage highlight payment plans in 3x or 4x by card, through a credit partner. The principle: the traveler takes out a mini-loan allocated to their purchase, repaid in installments with interest. This option requires prior application and acceptance, adding a step to the booking process.

The second mechanism falls under Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL), supported by fintechs like FLOA or other renewable credit providers. Some cards associated with these services allow for splitting any online purchase, including on Opodo, without the merchant site needing to integrate a specific module. The financier pays Opodo immediately, then collects from the customer according to the agreed schedule.

Renewable credit or allocated credit: the distinction that matters

Allocated credit finances a specific purchase (the plane ticket, the stay). In case of trip cancellation, the credit can also be canceled. Renewable credit, on the other hand, remains active regardless of the initial purchase. Confusing the two exposes one to repay a loan for a trip that did not take place.

Before subscribing, careful reading of the APR (annual percentage rate) remains the only reliable indicator of the actual cost. A “free” 3x installment through one’s bank mechanically costs less than a variable-rate renewable credit.

Opodo Prime and reduction of the amount to finance

Opodo Prime is Opodo’s paid subscription program, claiming several million users. Its interest in an installment payment logic is indirect but real: reducing the total amount to be split mechanically decreases credit fees.

The subscription provides access to discounts on flights, hotels, trains, and car rentals. For example, Opodo claims savings on a round trip from Paris to Lisbon combining flight, hotel, and car. If the final amount of the reservation decreases thanks to Prime, the cost of bank installment or credit decreases proportionally.

This approach, however, assumes that the cost of the Prime subscription is offset by the savings made. For an occasional traveler (one or two trips per year), the subscription is not always profitable. For a regular traveler, the combination of Prime + bank installment is likely the most economical setup.

Trap of installment payments on trips: the risk of cancellation

Splitting the payment for a trip creates a gap between the repayment schedule and the departure date. This gap poses a concrete problem in case of cancellation or modification of the reservation.

If the trip is canceled by the airline or by Opodo, the refund follows the standard circuit: it returns to the original payment method. With a bank installment, the bank generally adjusts the remaining installments. With external credit (BNPL or travel credit), the procedure depends on the contract: some providers continue to collect installments during the processing of the refund by Opodo.

  • Check the early repayment conditions of the credit before subscribing
  • Keep all proof of the cancellation request with Opodo
  • Contact the credit provider as soon as the cancellation is confirmed to suspend collections if the contract allows

The refund period from Opodo can take several weeks depending on the type of booking (flight only, package, hotel). During this time, installments continue to accrue if no action is taken with the financier.

Couple planning a trip on Opodo with the option of paying in installments on a tablet

The absence of an integrated installment payment module at Opodo makes the process less smooth than on other platforms, but banking alternatives and travel credit offers compensate for this lack. The main point of caution remains the actual cost of the installment, which can vary from simple to triple depending on the chosen solution, and the management of refunds in case of unforeseen events.
